Killing Christ: The Lord Jesus Before Pilate

Ecce Homo: Behold the Man

By Mike Robinson

Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!” Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him” (John 19:4-6).

pilate ecce homo behold the man jesus
Pilate had Christ scourged and then appealed to the pity of the Jewish leaders as Christ was mocked again by soldiers. Pilate went out to the Jews with Jesus beaten and dressed as a burlesqued king. Pilate announced yet again, that Christ is innocent. He offered Christ to the people and proclaimed, "Behold, the man!" This was met by the crowd’s shouts, "Crucify him, crucify him." Pilate took Christ into the palace and asked, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer (John 19:9). Exasperated at His quietness, Pilate told Him that he had total power over Him. The mysterious answer of Jesus as to the source of power still further alarmed him, and he made new efforts to secure His discharge.

The Jewish Elder’s Threats Secure Christ’s Death

You never hear Jesus say in Pilate's judgment hall one word that would let you imagine that He was sorry that He had undertaken so costly a sacrifice for us. When His hands are pierced, when He is parched with fever, His tongue dried up like a shard of pottery, when His whole body is dissolved into the dust of death, you never hear a groan or a shriek that looks like Jesus is going back on His commitment (Charles Spurgeon).

Pilate was often capricious, unfair, and cruel, but the elders were mindful that he was extremely careful to not alarm or displease the emperor. Thus the Jewish leaders told Pilate, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend: every one that makes himself a king speaks against Caesar" (John 19:12). The idea of being accused of supporting or showing weakness regarding treason was too much for the dithering judge to bear. Jesus was brought out and Pilate sat again and asked, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests blasphemed and cried out, "We have no king but Caesar" (John 19:15). Lastly Pilate capitulated to their pressures and outcry as he decreed Christ be crucified. Nonetheless, he retaliated by posting on the cross the inscription "The king of the Jews" and then washed his hands. The people then bellowed a curse-full malediction, "His blood be on us, and on our children" (Matthew 27:24-25). Then Jesus was transported to be crucified.

How far were these proceedings in accordance with the Roman law under which they had been taken and conducted? In the first place, Pilate, as procurator, was the proper officer to try the charges brought against Jesus. History observes that Pilate was no saint, he was absolutely ruthless. But here, probably due to his wife’s terrible warning, he attempted to serve justice at different points. However his preliminary blunder, which gave rise to all the following injustice, was in not acquitting and releasing Jesus immediately, once he had declared that he found no fault in Him. The imposing of an unjust sentence in such hostile and bias conditions was jurisdictive murder.

For their part, Jews will be drawn to the Talmud’s view that the most famous critic of halakhah’s formality, and the person who accused the rabbis of favoring legal technicalities over justice and mercy, was the only person for whom those same formalities proved of no avail. Presenting Jesus as the sole exemplar of halakhic execution, the Talmud poetically argues that the mercy, grace, and compassion that Jesus sought outside the law are found within the halakhah* itself (Chaim Saiman**).

The Jewish elders did not try Him for treason, but they convicted Him of blasphemy. They changed the indictment when they came to Pilate’s judgment seat. There they turned it into treason because with Rome death is automatic for those found guilty of treason.

Scholars demonstrate, with different levels of indignation, outrage, and sadness, the myriad ways in which the trial violated those procedures. The timing, the location, the manner of interrogation of the witnesses and of Jesus himself, the manner of the decision, the unanimity of the verdict—the list is long, and most of the violations seem grave. In contemporary language, this was not a harmless error but a colossal denial of due process.1

Christ and His Grace: A Powerful Framework for the Christian Life

It’s something too good not to believe (Vince Gilligan: producer of Breaking Bad).

Christ was unlawfully and unjustly sentenced to death by crucifixion. Nonetheless, His death is the means of salvation for believers. People need a clear message concerning the distinctions and interrelations between the law and gospel; duty and grace. Various churches unwittingly confuse the law and the gospel. Some churches fall into legalism. Others may affirm the opposite by stating that teaching moral duties is legalism.

The Holy God

Sin is a very serious matter, and it is taken seriously by God, though men often make light of it.  It is not only a transgression of the law of God, but an attack on the great Lawgiver Himself, a revolt against God.  It is an infringement on the inviolable righteousness of God, which is the very foundation of His throne, and an affront to the spotless holiness of God, which requires of us that we be holy in all manner of living (Louis Berkhof).

The Bible does not reveal a manageable god—a god who is only there to meet the believer’s needs. At times it seems that much of the Christian world appears to be embarrassed by the true God, and they try to change Him into a more user-friendly deity. An almighty sovereign God, full of awe and righteousness, is not what the world wants. But He is the God all people need. The Bible reveals that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). The Bible teaches that one is saved by grace alone, through faith alone because of Christ alone. Yes, one is saved through faith alone, but not a faith that remains alone (Phil. 2:8-10). When Jesus saves someone, a real Christian loves Jesus and wants to follow Him. The Christian follows the Lord and obeys His law. He doesn’t do this to find a way to make it to heaven by his works, but because he loves Jesus. We obey God out of gratitude forasmuch as Christ died to save us. Obedience is a fruit of salvation, but our works in no way get us to heaven.

That's who Jesus Christ is. He became the final Priest and the final Sacrifice. Sinless, he did not offer sacrifices for himself. Immortal, he never has to be replaced. Human, he could bear human sins. Therefore he did not offer sacrifices for himself; he offered himself as the final sacrifice. There will never be the need for another. There is one mediator between us and God. One priest. We need no other. Oh, how happy are those who draw near to God through Christ alone.2

Churches are to teach their members the commandments of God. They are to instruct their members in the ways of the Lord and exhort them to teach their family God’s moral code. Preachers are to make the clear distinction between justification (Rom. 4) and sanctification (Heb. 10) as well as grace and law. All Christians must understand that keeping God’s law doesn’t save their soul, but grace through faith in Christ alone saves them. And the Christian is to follow God’s law out of gratitude because Jesus died in their place.

If you love Me, you will keep My commandments (Jesus: John 14:15).

I … believe that I am, by Christ, freely and fully justified and acquitted from all my sins … yet, methinks, I find my heart more willing and desirous to do what the Lord commands … than ever it was before I did thus believe.3
The Christian is to be taught that obedience should be motivated by gratitude and love. The believer is to follow God’s law because he loves God and his fellow man. God is good and loving. This truth infuses obedient love into the believer’s heart, by the power and person of the Holy Spirit, through faith. If you love Jesus, you are called to follow His moral law. If a church loves Jesus, it is going to instruct and admonish its members to follow God’s law.

In the Book of Titus, Paul reminds believers that we are already justified, so we must earnestly strive to do good works.

But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men (Titus 3:4-8, italics mine).

Bavinck on The Crucified and Glorified Lord

Sin is guilt, pollution, and misery: a breach of the covenant of works, a loss of the image of God, and submission to the domination of corruption. Christ redeemed us from all three: by His suffering, by His fulfillment of the law, and by His conquest of death. Thus Christ’s benefits consist in the following:

1.      He restores our right relation to God and all creatures (the forgiveness of sins, justification, the purification of our conscience, acceptance as children, peace with God, Christian liberty, and so on);

2.      He renews us after God’s image (regeneration in the broad sense, renewal, re-creation, sanctification);

3.      He preserves us for our heavenly inheritance and will someday free us from all suffering and death and grant us eternal blessedness (preservation, perseverance, glorification). …

It is Christ Himself, the crucified and glorified Lord, who by His Word directs our faith to His sacrifice, by His Spirit incorporates us into His fellowship, and by both Word and Spirit prepares and preserves us for heavenly blessedness.4

Pilate Declares Christ Innocent Then Has Him Crucified

Pilate Crucifies an Innocent Man

"The sentence falls from the lips of Pilate, "Crucify Him." We are stunned. This man just pronounced Him innocent. Now he condemns ... the innocent to die" ( Maret Dinsmore).

"Killing Jesus" by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard: Lacks Atonement Focus

1.
no redemption killing jesus o'reilly
In Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard's Killing Jesus: A History the words “redemption” and “atonement” are not mentioned regarding Christ’s death on the cross (see Loc. # 191, 1546; Loc. # 1782, 1784, 1787, & 3247). This is the case since the authors hold to naturalistic methodology in their historical analysis.

Video Trailer: Killing Christ: An Apologetics Approach

"Killing Jesus Christ" the Book

In present-day literature, of all the themes written about the life and death of Jesus Christ, none
death of christ book
have recurred more frequently than the “historical Jesus.” Naturalistically inclined authors claim the New Testament picture is not reliable, we've been told again and again [see Killing Christ book HERE].

But this snubs the obvious truth. Christ’s life and death are best known through first century Jewish accounts (the New Testament) and not contemporary occidental scholarship. The truth flows from one’s core convictions and makes no sense if severed from the presuppositions that give it force.

To understand the historical content of Christ’s death and life, start with the writers of His period who spoke His language within His culture.

Indeed, early Christianity was basically a movement of disenfranchised Jews who placed great emphasis on human sin and the need of divine redemption. The wickedness involved in the execution of Christ we can recognize and know. Besides, the tragic nature of the crucifixion of Jesus was foreordained to forever solve the problem of sin as it alleviates human condemnation.
This volume aims to correct slurs, while simultaneously positing positive evidence and rational proof that the Gospels reveal the truth about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Bill O’ Reilly, Skeptics, and Killing Jesus

Bill O’ Reilly, author of Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy, declared that Jesus merely started “a philosophy”1 and much of the biblical narratives are allegorical and symbolic—not real history. He also suggested that Christians do not worship Jesus Christ but worship the “spirit of Jesus.”2 He’s convinced that Christ’s main undertaking was to teach men how to live. I have no doubt that Christ’s moral teaching is as important as it is profound, yet His primary mission was to die to set men free. Many other skeptics and liberals have mounted quests for the historical Jesus and have landed not far from where O’ Reilly takes his readers. Ultimately the Bible holds, as the skeptics have found nothing. But skeptics will continue to publish books about their new theories on the life and death of Christ even though we have an infallible account of Christ in the New Testament.

Beyond Bill O’ Reilly, few disbelieving sleuths believe that Jesus Christ died for the ungodly (Romans 4:5) and rose from the grave in victory (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). I do. And not only that, I know with full certainty. Some contend Christ was a good teacher who died because of a tragic set of accidents. Still a few others say that Christ never existed, thus never died.

Of course, theories abound in cases of history were evidence is scarce. But as the reader will discover, there exists not only deep layers of historical data for the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, there are potent logical reasons why such must be the case.

My objective is to lay out the evidence for the truth of the Gospel’s narratives and demonstrate that theories by skeptics (O’ Reilly, Aslan, etc.) not only have several faults, but what they pen, when it is inconsistent with the scriptural accounts of Christ, cannot possibly be true. I will argue:

  • God is.
  • His word has been revealed.
  • Scripture reveals the truth about Christ’s arrest, trial, crucifixion, death, and resurrection; the contrary is impossible.

Indeed, Jesus Christ died. He was crucified. Nevertheless, His illegal execution was merely the beginning of a comprehensive transformation in history. Since Jesus’ death and resurrection, it often appears that the kingdom of man and the kingdom of God have traded places. Christ's outlook, however, was a bold and challenging assurance. The kingdom Jesus launched is the one we still see expanding today.

Atheism and False Religions

The New Atheists, Thor, the Easter Bunny, and God

By Mike Robinson author of Killing Christ: Contesting the Trendy Critics Regarding the Death & Resurrection of Jesus.

It was always going to be difficult to defend atheism (in fact, impossible; only God could prove a universal negative), but even zealous devotees of the new atheism concede things are going worse than hoped.  This newfangled anti-theism got off to a rough start because the majority of their leaders and their internet cliques were philosophically and theologically naïve—especially Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Richard Dawkins. On Dawkins, non-theist Michael Ruse opined, “The God Delusion makes me ashamed to be an atheist.… Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion would fail any introductory philosophy or religion course. Proudly he criticizes that whereof he knows nothing.” Nonetheless, the surly e-atheists have been working hard but are evidently overwhelmed, trying to defend the indefensible. The growing legions of Christian apologists have made things much more difficult by refusing to concede any ground as they unleash a myriad of arguments in favor of theism.

By now, the militant neo-atheists involved in missionary work seem to be in a state of boredom. Their aggressive verbal abuse just doesn't seem to pack the same kick it had when it was novel to be ill-mannered and insolent in arguing against Christianity. The new atheists are angry because they pugnacity is so stale that no one cares anymore when they call good people horrific names.

Name-calling may get one’s endorphins lit-up, but it doesn't make for good argumentation. The issue is God. God not only exists; He must exist and anti-theists loathe this truth. God is infinite, all-knowing, all-powerful, everywhere-present, independent, lofty, and impeccably transcendent. Yet, His majestic loftiness extended within His omnipresence allows Him to be immanent everywhere. The God of the Bible is the eternal fount of all that is and will be—He is the infinite basis of all truth and actuality, the Complete Absolute flowing in aseity upon which all contingent things are wholly reliant. The true God is the unity grounding and sustaining all the innumerable particulars. Yahweh is the ultimate bridge and netting of the one and the many—the unifier of all the diversity. So God is not only one; not merely a monad or a lone oneness, but the three distinct infinite and eternal persons in one being (Matthew 28:19).

Thus, it is this holy and transcendent God in whom the new atheists bleakly attack. But wait. When one attends an atheist worship service led by Reverend Dawkins or another atheist priest, the preacher will almost always profess: “I do not believe in God, Santa, the Easter Bunny, elves, pixies, or leprechauns. Moreover I reject the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), Apollo, Thor, and Allah, so I am merely a man who believes in one less god than the Christians.” But this will not offer any real assistance to the ingenuous atheist. Opinions concerning pixies and FSMs are tied to a particular type of being. Such notions are in the same category as ideas about whether snow is on the mountain or whether Big Foot exists. Beliefs regarding God concern the transcendent—the source who provides the preconditions for knowledge—the cause and foundation for all human experience. The eternal unchanging God is the basis for everything in heaven and earth because He is the foundation for all reality. Elves and material mutable gods have the same limits as material items, biological things, and molecules—all of which are submissive to the force of light, motion, and energy. Not so with the transcendent God, the high and lofty one. Not only is God not submissive to the forces of nature, but He also sustains them. The Lord God is in a completely different ontological category than the FSM, elves, Thor, and Santa.

Yahweh is the omnipotent One who makes it possible for anyone and anything to exist. Moreover, He is the One who supplies the universal operation features required to even use logic in discussing such things. Elves, the Easter Bunny, and Apollo do not have an ontology (nature) powerful enough to provide the universal necessities required for intelligibility. The FSM, Thor, and Santa, analyzed through modal logic and theology, lack the capacity to account for the universal features needed for intelligibly. Whether a Dodo bird or Thor exists does not affect the conditions required for intelligibly. They are limited by their ever-changing and finite nature. The necessity of Yahweh is revealed in the language of independence, absolute, immutable, omnipotence, omnipresence, and transcendence. Proof regarding the existence of the FSM, Apollo, or my pet turtle would involve limited changing beings, not universal unchanging laws of logic. Proof for the truth of Yahweh permeates every aspect of human experience, the existence of all things, every engagement of logic, every moral deed as well as every known and background aspect of intelligibility. And this helps explain why the new atheists are so belligerent and irrational. They are not only attacking that which they know exists, they are attacking that which must exist—and He alone is in charge.

God is the Necessary Foundation

God … knows all things (1 John 3:20).

All things are properly said to be … supernaturally through infinite power (as from the terminus a quo and by the way of creation).[1]

The argument for Christianity must therefore be that of presupposition. With Augustine it must be maintained that God’s revelation is the sun from which all other light derives. The best, the only, the absolutely certain proof of the truth of Christianity is that unless its truth be presupposed there is no proof of anything. Christianity is proved as being the very foundation of the idea of proof itself.[2]

There is no neutral starting point in the knowledge quest. Either one is open to uphold the truth of the non-reductive immaterialist conception of the world or one is not. If one is a Christian, one sees evidence everywhere of God’s handiwork. But the rigid materialist is holding his eyes tightly shut to avoid the all-persuasive evidence of God’s work. The atheistic reductive impulse leads to maddening ideas: the brain is the mind—all the properties of the mind are physical, the laws of logic are conventions, men are mere animals, and other rubbish. T.F. Torrance observed that “the utterly contingent nature of the universe and its inherent intelligibility raises with us the question … as to its transcendent ground which the universe … rests. By its very nature as contingent and intelligible, the universe embodies … a reference beyond itself …. God … as the Creator … is the ground.” As God is the foundation for the Christian worldview, He supplies the fixed ontic platform as the sufficient truth condition, which can justify induction, immutable universals, and the uniformity of the physical world. But materialistic atheism lacks such a fixed ontic platform. Consequently, it fails to provide the sufficient ground required to justify science and the investigation of the natural world. The true and living God subsists and accounts for the intricate and distinct interconnection of the particulars in the united cosmos. That is the reason many theologians have mused, “I believe in order that I may understand.” Van Til uses this illustration to argue via presupposition:

We cannot prove the existence of the beams underneath the floor if by proof you mean that they must be ascertainable in a way that we can see the chairs and the tables of the room. But the very idea of the floor as a support for the tables and chairs requires the idea of beams underneath. But there would be no floor if no beams were underneath. Thus there is absolute certain proof for the existence of God... Even non-Christians presuppose its truth while they verbally reject it. They need to presuppose the truth of Christianity to account for their own accomplishments.[3]

Atheism reposes upon a mutable ontology, thus it cannot underwrite immutable truths—including the allege immutable truth God doesn’t exist.
I.                    How can an atheist know something is immutable (he lacks revelation from an all-knowing source)? As atheists have finite knowledge and lack knowledge of the future they cannot, in principle, maintain that it is immutably true that God does not exist.
Thus, under atheism God can exist in the future; and because God is necessary, omnipresent, and immutable—successively God exists in the future, God must exist always.
This is the case modally. God’s ontology necessitates that if [since] He exists anywhere (the future) He exists everywhere as the omnipresent Lord.

II.
If [p] is not immutably true then it is possible that in the future God does exist [q].
Since [q] is possible in discussing the omnipresent God, God must exist.
One can envisage God existing in at least one possible world. The biblical God is an immutable being that exists of necessity. Consequently, one can think of a being that exists of necessity existing in at least one possible world. Since there is a being who exemplifies the property of existing in all possible worlds (He’s omnipresent), it follows that He exists in all possible worlds. As one can think God could possibly exist then God necessarily exists; which means He exists in all possible worlds including our actual world. God is inescapable.
A possible world is a complete account of a maximal state of affairs. The notion of possible worlds also exhibits a distinction between material necessity and logical necessity. It may be a material necessity that light has specific properties of wave and particle. But that does not mean light must have those exact properties transversely in all possible worlds. The properties of light in our universe are of material necessity, but not logical necessity.
For light to have the same properties in all possible worlds would mean it is necessary, hence light would require no explanation outside itself. For light to require no explanation outside itself, it would have to exist across all possible worlds as it is in our actual world. In other words, there is no possible way things could have been that doesn't include the present properties of light in the actual world. It’s worth noting that the laws of nature, including the properties of light, are not the determinants of necessity as are the laws of logic. This truth of logical necessity is entrenched in the universality of the laws of logic which the laws of nature are devoid.
Atheism is impossible. When anyone attempts to escape the truth that God exists, he falls in a trap he cannot escape. This point is well made in the illustration of a man made of smoke, who is trying to ascend out of the gaseous void by means of stairs made of steam. He cannot get out of the void, for he has nothing to stand on. Likewise, without God, one cannot make sense of anything. The atheist has nothing to stand on (an ontic Archimedean locus of reference) and he lacks a rational apparatus to scale—an epistemic ladder that would allow him to view reality with clarity.
