Biblical movie ‘Risen’ isn’t only for the spiritual, says actor Joseph Fiennes

When Joseph Fiennes goes into a church, he's "overwhelmed" by the potent and concentrated atmosphere of spirituality. He had a similar feeling, he said, when shooting scenes of Risen that involved Jesus. "You feel like this material is powerful," he says of filming process, "and one enters with great respect towards it. Whether you're religious or not, when you see a man strung up, dripping with blood on a cross, if you have one aspect of humanity you can't help but be arrested by that.

Our film centers around those sorts of images a huge deal, so it is emotional and arresting." Fiennes, who has portrayed major characters like Martin Luther, William Shakespeare and Merlin, stars in Risen as Clavius, a Roman soldier present for the crucifixion of Jesus. When Christ's tomb is found empty three days later, Clavius is put in charge of the investigation to find the body -- and those responsible for stealing it. Aside from the pedigree of the film's director, Kevin Reynolds, it was this twist on the well-known Jesus story that Fiennes found compelling.

Everyone knows the details of the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension, he says, and dealing with that subject matter alone is a challenge. "But what I loved was the angle from which we come to that story which is dear to so many," he said. They approach the events through the eyes of a skeptic. "Although [Clavius is] a fictional character, nevertheless we know that a high-ranking official must have been there [at the crucifixion]. What gave the film momentum, to me, was the detective story. As the events unfold, Clavius' conditioning begins to falter, and I love that aspect."

Fiennes took his research for the role seriously, spending time both in a gladiator school and with a detective in order to get the different aspects of Clavius right. "The film is structured as a number of interrogations towards Jesus' followers," he says, "and I thought that honestly I wouldn't know how to interrogate anyone. I'm not very good even with my kids when they're naughty. So I thought, 'I'm going to ask a detective.' So I worked with this gentleman, and that gave me a great insight into Clavius." He knows, though, that Christian films are often polarizing. They tend to be deemed either "too much like Sunday School" or not true enough to Biblical text. Christ is Risen so we can trust God

My wife woke up in the middle of the night and the discussion went like this:

Donna: I am so worried I can’t sleep.

Me: Don’t worry God is in control.

Donna: But we need….

Me: Don’t worry God is in control.

Donna: OK. But I still can’t sleep.

[A] My wife worries.

[B] My wife knows Jesus is risen.

[C] God is in control.

[D] I don’t have to worry.

God, you see, is always in control.

One can easily see that there’s more than logical tension between [A] and [B]. They are based on antithetical foundations. And the resurrection of Jesus confirms [C] and [D].

In America and around the world, people pray, sometimes for hours, to see God answer their petitions. If you attend a church testimony meeting, you’ll see God is answering so many prayers it’s a wonder His hand isn’t permanently extended. And whenever He meets someone’s needs, almost everyone seems to be asking Him for more.

Christ’s popularity is universal among His people because: He died for them, He is risen, and He answers prayers.

“I don’t pray to other gods,” Tony said. “Only Jesus. He’s the only one who came back from the grave. He’s the only one alive. Why would I ask a dead man for help?”

Risen: A Movie Hollywood Fears and Loathes

Will "Risen," an upcoming movie about the events following the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, prove as successful as Mel Gibson's gritty and controversial "Passion of the Christ," the top-grossing Christian movie of all time?

"Passion of the Christ," Gibson's 2004 blockbuster, is known for its gory and controversial presentation of Jesus' crucifixion. The film, slapped with an R-rating, won numerous awards after its release and remains the most successful Christian movie ever in terms of box office gross ($611 million worldwide).

The multitude of faith-based films that have since followed Gibson's work have failed to surpass the director's 2004 project, including last year's much hullabalooed "rival," "Son of God" (see a comparison here).

Steven Mirkovich, best known for his editing work on 2004's award-winning "Passion of the Christ," is at the helm once more for the new biblically-inspired film, "Risen."

Risen the Movie Hollywood Hates

Risen a new movie Hollywood hates

According to a report from Jesus Daily, Hollywood has been trying to sweep this movie under the rug. They even claim that one film studio was looking to purchase the rights to the movie solely for the purpose of making sure it was never released. But this movie is too good not to hit the big screen! After 10 years in the making, it was finally picked up by AFFIRM Films -- the faith based movie arm of Sony Pictures -- and will hit theaters January 22, 2016.

Because Hollywood has historically shunned religious films, faith based movies have fallen victim to an unfortunate stereotype of being generally low-budget, with mediocre acting and poor production quality. But that certainly cannot be said about Risen, which is being promoted as a continuation of the groundwork laid by Mel Gibson’s Passion Of The Christ -- the top-grossing Christian movie of all time.

There are a lot of reasons to be excited about the release of this film. One of the most intriguing aspects to me personally is the movie’s entire premise. The film itself is about Jesus’ resurrection -- a story that has already been told many times over in similar fashion. But Risen will take a completely different approach, while maintaining a “faithful scriptural treatment of the story.” The story will be told through the eyes of the non-believer, Clavius. Clavius is a Roman soldier tasked by Pontius Pilate to investigate Jesus’ death and resurrection, in order to debunk the claim that Jesus is the Son of God.
